Twin Commander Models

Piston Commander Series

The Aero Commanders were designed by Ted Smith with the first iteration being the 520 model (1952) featuring twin Lycoming GO-435 engines producing 260 hp and were considered the first real twin engine corporate airplane produced. The 560 model introduced the swept tail, while the 560A (L-26B) was the first off the shelf light-twin engine ever to be used by the President of the United States (Eisenhower) as Air Force One. The 720 model was the first Aero Commander with a pressurized fuselage but only 13 were ever produced. The last of the piston-driven Aero Commanders produced (1979) was a 500S affectionally known as the Shrike-Commander which was made famous by Bob Hoover and his aerial acrobatics demonstrations. Bob Hoover’s 500S is currently at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum in full livery.
